According to an informal poll during our morning meeting yesterday, my fellow Seattle Planning Commission members noted the following as top issues facing families with children when deciding where to live:
· Schools, including:
o Districting and choices
o Organization (is it separate from City politics)
o Quality
o Location
· Parks
· Cost of housing and overall affordability of housing
o Cost of housing + transportation (H+T Index)
· Convenient retail
· Mulit-family, family-sized housing
· Neighborhood safety
· Playgrounds
· Safe streets
· Bike system appropriate for children
· Age-appropriate after school programing
· Bike routes to parks
· Libraries
· Family-supportive workplaces (flex-time, work-from-home, daycare…)
· A concentration of other children
· Opportunities for grandparents to live nearby, to volunteer at schools, etc.
· Recreation Centers and Parks & Rec Programing
· Yard Space/Outdoor Space
· Traffic Safety
· Daycare
· Swimming Pools
It will be interesting to see if the cities and neighborhoods I visit in my travels have all or a majority of these qualities.
